About Archaeology  magazine subscription

Archaeology Magazine

Archaeology Magazine was founded in 1948 under the sponsorship of the Archaeological Institute of America. The magazine is issued on a bimonthly basis and is dedicated to providing the latest information on archaeology for the public and for professional archaeologists.

In Archaeology Magazine, you will find news on archaeological findings, digs and prominent archaeologists. The publication also provides book reviews and information on traveling to archaeological sites.

There is also in depth articles on current happenings in the archaeological world. There are articles on archaeological and detective work on historical outlaws, or trying to find the lost aqueduct of Rome, or archaeology and the first Olympics. Articles in recent issues examine the just discovered tomb of an ancient singer of Egypt, while another story talks about the problems of violence when excavating in an area of the world where there are outbreaks of hostilities.  A column in Archaeology Magazine reveals the publication’s editors list of top archaeological finds over the last year.

World roundups of archaeological finds reported in Archaeological Magazine include the discovery of the SS Terra Nova, a three masted ship from 1884 which was responsible for the safe passage of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. A wall of an early fur trading fort in Edmonton, Canada may have been discovered. At the same site, discoveries of artifacts from the Blackfoot tribe have also been found. And a skeleton of a man has been found in a burial chamber in Oaxaca, Mexico that has murals of ball games. The chamber is believed to be 1,200 years old.

If stories of archaeological finds and digs fascinate you, then you need a subscription to Archaeology Magazine. The magazine is detailed and scientific enough for a professional archaeologist in the field but easy enough to understand for anyone with an interest in archaeology.

Review of Archaeology magazine

Current Archaeology has always taken the amateur's perspective of archaeology and aims to make archaeology accessible to the general not academic public. It does this admirable and, most importantly, without over simplifying. Through the use of glossy photographs and clear illustrations the magazine brings archaeology to life in a way that text only based journals fail to do. Despite the glossy pictures and the accessibility the articles are rigorous and informative, and the letters debate can be intense. Current Archaeology offers a comprehensive way to keep up to date with finds through out the UK and covers all time periods. Its an enjoyable read and I recommend it to academic and amateur alike.
