About Church Times Magazine
Considered as an Anglican weekly newspaper, suitably updated and providing worthwhile news regarding all those issues that concern its reading population, this newspaper has seen its popularity grow over the years.
Considered independent of the Church of England hierarchy, it is as independent as a publication should be. However, its ownership changed from the hands of the family managing it to Hymns Ancient & Modern which is a Christian Charitable Trust.
After the Reformation, in the changing religious landscape of an 18th Century Britain, where Protestant beliefs were taking hold of a previously Catholic population and there were wrangles between the various believers, such a newspaper was started with the aim of spreading predominantly Anglo-Catholic principles, in the face of a converting population.
By the 19th Century, most of England had converted to Protestantism and the Catholic minority was severely persecuted. Church Times is thus a product of its times and a mirror to the opinions of such a minority that was in danger in Victorian Britain.
